Spring is the perfect time to learn something new. That holds true for the promise of spring, too!

I have been learning how to operate my camera in the hopes of taking better pictures. Our family has three high school graduations and two weddings to look forward to this spring, summer and fall. Plenty of picture-taking opportunities await!

Final Totals for Dam-to-Dam 2010 Fund Raiser

Wow! What a weekend! Thank you ice fishing participants from Newaygo, Newaygo County and all of West Michigan. The 2010 Ice Fishing Tournament with proceeds benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County was a tremendous success. The participants between Croton and Hardy Dams raised $9,000 and The Fremont Foundation again matched the funds for a total of $18,000.

Here is a link to the virtual photo book commemorating the event. Look for copies of the book at Croton Bay Trading Post, The American Legion Post 381, Gene's Family Market, the Driftwood Bar and Grill, and Pangburn Properties of Croton. Books can also be seen at Hilltop Shopping Center at Hardy Dam, and Wisner's Rents Canoes in Newaygo at the river.

Dam-to-Dam 2010 a HUGE Success!

The 4th Annual Dam-to-Dam Ice Fishing Tournament benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County was a HUGE success! Totals for the event are not yet complete but preliminary numbers suggest this is the biggest event thus far: 800 + fishing contest entrants; 2300 raffle tickets sold; more sponsors; more events and more prizes... and an official web site!

The "Dam She's Hot" contest took place on Friday night, February 12 at the newly re-opened Driftwood Bar and Grill on Croton Pond. Twenty contestants vied for the coveted crown, too many to fit on the stage at once. Two rounds of competition culminated in the crowd selecting our reigning queen.

Contestants had to spell Leinenkugel's correctly (creative spellings included: B-E-E-R; G-O-O-D-N-E-S-S; and even "I can't spell it"), describe their perfect date which included a six-pack of Leinenkugel's, and demonstrate their sexiest cast. The winner received bragging rights for one year plus a Leinenkugel jacket as well as a keep-sake plaque.

Outer Vibe entertained the packed house all night.

Fishermen, women and children began setting up "fish camp" early Saturday morning. Prime real estate went quickly. Parking anywhere near the ice went even quicker!

Fish were scarce this day. Friends, Family, and Fun were in abundance.

Fishing awards and raffling prizes took place in the afternoon. Check back soon to view the virtual photo book of this year's events.

Leinenkugel and WLAV were again corporate sponsors of the event. Many local businesses were featured sponsors as well. Please visit the official web site for the most current listing of sponsors. Thank you Newaygo County and West Michigan for coming out and supporting such a worthwhile cause.

The 4th Annual Ice Fishing Tournament between Croton and Hardy Dams takes place this weekend. Bring your cameras! Take lots of pictures. Enter your best shot of the weekend for your chance to win cool prizes and for your picture to be used in promotional materials for the 5th Annual Dam-to-Dam tournament!

The rules are pretty simple:
1. Email your full-size image to PhotoContest@FreezeFramePublishing.com
2. Include your contact information in the email: your name, address, where the picture was taken, who is in the picture, any "stories" of the picture you would like to share.
3. Enter as many images as you like. One image per email, please.
4. Photographers agree to grant limited rights to the Dam-to-Dam Committee and to Freeze Frame Publishing for the use of your images in promotional materials in perpetuity.
5. Photographers retain all rights to pictures, except as stated above.
6. Photographers must sign a release agreeing to use of pictures.
7. Minors must have signed releases from parents or guardians agreeing to these terms of use.
8. Individuals in pictures must sign releases for their likenesses to appear in promotional materials.
9. Staff from Color House Graphics will select the winning pictures from the entries submitted. No details of the pictures will be provided to the judges before their selections have been made.
10. Winners will be notified by email.
11. Pictures may appear in Freeze Frame Publishing's blog and "news" links as well as the official tournament web site. Other venues may also be used in promoting this annual event.
12. ALL entries must be received by Saturday, February 20, 2010.

The prizes:
1st place: 2 posters, 2 8x10's, 4 5x7's, 25 wallets of image plus a photo book that YOU create!
2nd place: 2 posters, 4 4x6's, of image.

Thank you. We are so excited to have the opportunity of sharing some of our best printed samples of your custom created products at PMA2010 (Photo Marketers Association International) in Anaheim, California later this month. We will be sharing space with Xerox in their booth at this annual event. We will be talking about Freeze Frame Publishing, our printing and finishing processes, and our print provider, Color House Graphics.

People from the West Michigan area will recognize this local iconic sign. This card was created by local photographer, Jim Hegerty.

Local graphic designer, Sue Christafferson, created these products.

Nice Nines proprietor and rally driver, Matt Johnston, created these posters with our software.

Two high school students also submitted great products. Devin Hendrick, a senior at Northview High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan created the samples above. Devin's portfolio won an award from Kendall College of Art and Design and her works are currently in competition for the "Governor's Traveling Art Show." Best wishes, Devin.

2010 John Deere Day at Voelker Implement Sales!

Winter in several communities across the country can only mean one thing: John Deere Day!

John Deere Day gives dealerships an opportunity to showcase new equipment, thank loyal customers, and welcome new customers into the John Deere family.

Voelker Implement Sales, Inc. of Big Rapids, Michigan held its annual John Deere Day on Saturday, February 6 at their dealership on Northland Dr. Voelker has been servicing John Deere customers since 1951.

The outside thermometer may have read "b-b-b-i-t-t-t-e-r cold," but the inside temperature was warm and inviting. The Voelker Team served pancakes, sausage, ham, fruit, and several hot and cold beverages to a friendly, multi-generational crowd. John Deere Day has been a tradition for many local families. Grandparents bought their grandchildren this day and recounted memories of their own grandparents bringing them. This is quite a community event: friends, families and neighbors gathered around tables and tractors catching up on past events and planning future events.

Freeze Frame Publishing was on hand to take a few pictures to commemorate the event. A John Deere Day photo book is on display at Voelkers. Thanks, Tim for inviting us! The breakfast was great but participating in this event was even better!

4th Annual Dam-to-Dam Ice Fishing Tournament Feb. 13!

In less than 4 weeks, ice fisher men, women and children will take to the ponds of Croton Dam and Hardy Dam for the 4th Annual Ice Fishing Contest to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County, Michigan. This year will be even bigger than last year! Check the official contest web site for more information on all the events happening Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13.

Registration has already begun at several local establishments and continues through 10:00 a.m. February 13. Registration fees are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 13 and under. Each registrant receives one raffle ticket for a chance to win great prizes. More raffle tickets can be purchased. The raffle begins at 4:00 p.m. at the Croton American Legion Post 381 on Croton-Hardy Drive.

To qualify for your chance at the biggest catch in the walleye, perch, pike, or bluegill divisions, you must be in line by 3:30 at the Croton American Legion Post 381 for official weigh-in and measurement.

This is a great family-friendly community event which raises money for a wonderful organization: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County.

3rd Annual Dam-to-Dam Fundraising Event in February!

It's that time of year again where we take to the ice of Croton/Hardy Dams in what has become a favorite community fundraising event for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County: The 3rd Annual Dam-to-Dam Ice Fishing Tournament. This year's Ice Fishing Tournament takes place on Saturday, February 13, 2010, with a pre-tournament kick-off party on Friday, February 12.

Last year's event raised a total of $11,195.94 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County. The community raised $5,597.97 and received a matching grant from the Fremont Foundation.

HELP! Where did my pictures go?

With one week remaining in which to create and order photo books in time for holiday giving, we are receiving a few calls for help regarding the mystery of the "missing picture file" and picture resolutions registering at 0.

So, what's going on? Is there a grinch in your computer ? A Scrooge "bah-humbug"-ing your attempts to create the perfect, personal, heart-felt holiday gift of a photo book custom created by you?

I think I can help you: Create a folder specific to each photo book, card or calendar project you are working on! Put copies of all of the pictures you wish to use in that project in that folder. Our software operates differently than online photo book companies where you upload your pictures to a folder in cyberspace. Freeze Frame Publishing's software resides ON your computer, there is no uploading of pictures required. Our software looks for your pictures to be in the same place each time. For example, if your pictures came from a CD or a flash drive and you remove the CD or flashdrive you will get an error message of "Missing picture file" because your picture files are no longer in their original place.

By creating a specific folder for each photo project you are working on, you will never get a "missing picture file" message because your pictures will remain in the same place for the software to "find" them.

Fast Track Photo Books from Freeze Frame Publishing!

In a hurry? No time to make a photo book to commemorate that special occasion? In less than 10 minutes you can create a photo book using Fast Track from Freeze Frame Publishing!

1. Open the photo book program and select either the Create New Book or Fast Track option.

2. Select Fast Track

To create our Classic 8.5" x 11" landscape photo book, select the Landscape option. Click Next.

3. Select the Keyhole Cover option for our Classic 8.5" x 11" Landscape photo book.

4. Select a theme. For this example I chose Clean (white page backgrounds). When the book wizard is finished and before you order your photo book you can add or change background images if you like using the stock backgrounds (available in the software and accessed through the backgrounds tab near the bottom of the screen) or your own pictures.

5. You will now select your pictures. TIP: Create a folder with the pictures you wish to use in this photo book. The Fast Track program uses ALL the pictures you select. It will save you time if you pre-select your pictures.

6. Select the pictures you wish to use. For this example I created a folder, Bowl Party, with all of the pictures I wish to use in this photo book. I clicked the Select All option from the top tool bar. You can also select individual pictures, but this will add time to your book building.

7. This Fast Track book will have 36 pages and use all 108 pictures I selected. The more pictures you select, the more pages your finished book will have. Approximately 60 pictures are needed for a Fast Track 20-page photo book. Remember: you can always edit your photo book by removing or adding pictures and pages before placing your order.

8. To place your pictures in a specific order, select Preview Pictures.

9. Click, drag, and drop your pictures in the order you want them to appear in your book. For this example, I chose the picture I wanted on the first page.

10. Add a caption to your first page. If you do not want a caption, leave this area blank and click Next to finish.

11. You're Finished! Before placing your order you can view each page and add captions, change backgrounds, change picture layouts and sizes if you like. Send to FreezeFrame and leave the rest to us! Remember to Share Online with friends and family. You can send anyone on your email list a virtual copy of your newly, quickly created photo book. Click the Share Online button and follow the prompts. TIP: send the virtual photo book to yourself and forward the link to all of your friends and family. This method will save you time, too.

Little People Tips from Photographer Andrea Booker

Andrea Booker, professional photographer, continues her series of tips and suggestions for us. Her post today gives us pointers in working with young children.

Let's talk about photographing children (affectionately called little people). Little people are always full of surprises as most of us know. They say funny things, cry, jump, run, give you the 'look,' frown when you want them to smile, smile when you want their 'serious look,' and look away when you want them to look at you. Most little people are even cute when they're mad and simply glowing when they are happy or excited about something. For me personally, photographing children is a very rewarding challenge and I enjoy it very much.

So, how can you prepare your little ones for their photo sessions? Here are a few tips to consider:

*Unless it's a first birthday picture, have their bellies full. For those one-year-old cake moments, you don't want your baby overly hungry, but we'll let the cake top off their little tanks.

*For little babies, it's best to take their pictures when their bellies are full and their diapers aren't. It's also good to have a backup picture outfit for just-in-case purposes.

*Have them dressed in their photo session outfits. The less of a deal it is to get settled in at the session location, the easier it will be to take their pictures. We'll try to be quick during the session so your little one isn't too bored or otherwise uninterested.

*Toys? If there are one or two small toys that your child/children love, yes, bring them. We can play a few quick games with them to get some fun smiles from the little ones. Please make sure these toys are clean and in as good repair as possible as they may end up in the pictures.

*Props? A family I photograph very frequently LOVES props and it's really so much fun for me as a photographer to see what goodies they bring with them. This last time, they brought an old Radio Flyer wagon, put the cute little one in the back and we took the shot. It's so rewarding to be able to provide the family with the picture they had in their heads. So, props are always fun; just talk with your photographer first to give them a heads up. They might have a specific prop already so you wouldn't have to worry about bringing it with you.

*If there are any areas of concern with your child participating in the session, please let your photographer know in advance so that they may be better prepared. For example, some children are afraid of balloons, so the photographer would need to know not to use balloons in the session. Also, let your photographer know of any allergies as some will use treat 'bribes' or other attention grabbing tools.

As a parent or participant in the session, even if you aren't getting your photo taken, please be prepared to help. The photographers can direct the helpers where they need them to help to reduce confusion, distraction and chaos. However, here is a quick list of participant actions I strongly recommend parents/participants NOT do:

*Both parents playing peek-a-boo or jumping up and down or hollering to their child(ren). Not only is this behavior distracting to the child, it's also distracting to the photographer. If the child(ren) react to these actions by the parents, wonderful, but please, one at a time.

*Please stand behind the photographer while still giving them room to work and change positions.

*Please don't yell or loudly instruct the child(ren) to smile or otherwise react to the photo session.

It has been my experience that these actions do not end up with the most wonderful results. We try to keep the sessions fun, moving, and memorable for the whole family so that next time, little 'Suzie' will be excited to go have her pictures taken rather than run away from the photographer. It's much more fun for me when the child(ren) recognize me as "the picture lady" and are ready to get down to business for a fun and fabulous photo session.

These are my tips, opinions, and experiences.

November Scrap Book Events Details!

As many of you know, Freeze Frame Publishing will be participating in our first scrap book events in November. We are quite excited for this new venture; we've met many interested scrap bookers and custom card makers already!

Our booth will have a little bit different look to it: we will showcase samples of custom cards and background pages created by scrap book enthusiasts. We will also have FREE software CDs available and we will give FREE card samples to people joining our email list. We will also have 12x12 scrap book pages kits available for purchase. Of course, we will have sample photo books on display as well.

Andrea Hudleston Booker Blog Post #2: Why Hire a Professional Photographer

This is the second post from local professional photographer, Andrea Hudleston Booker.

To illustrate the importance of using professionals let me narrate a very true and personal story. A few months ago after my $30 haircut (wash, cut and style), I thought it would be a great idea to further update my look with some highlights. After just spending money on my hair, I wanted to do it "the more affordable way," meaning my then fiance and I could 'handle it' with a $15 box of color from our local store.

To make a longer story short and to save myself a bit of embarrassment, the outcome was not so good and I ended up calling a professional at 10:30 p.m. with my hair emergency. Luckily for me, my professional hair-saver, as we'll call him, was able to meet me at the salon bright and early the following morning to bring my locks to their true potential (or at least much better than we had done). Total cost to fix my hair, $120! Had we opted to hire the professional from the beginning to handle my job, we would have saved approximately $40; and these days, $40 is a lot of money.

In closing, professionals are labeled professionals because they have experience and training in their specific specialties. Sure, just as anyone can take a picture and anyone can highlight a person's hair does not imply that the outcome will be satisfactory in any way. Let's leave highlights as well as your Single Moments to the professionals.
